Bad Daughter

poem

Bad Daughter

You’re a bad daughter they imply.

As they snicker and they smile.

But they’ll never know how much I’ve hidden,

How much I’ve seen, how much I’ve cried.

Ive watched my father beaten, bloody and blue.

I watched her stand over him and tear him in two.

I’ve watched her laugh and tell him their through.

I watched him plead, oh if only you knew.

But she won, death took him.

He could hold on no longer.

And he left me here, with her.

Alone with our monster.

And I’ve kept our secret, I’ve suffered the same.

I was beaten, I was shamed, my soul heavily maimed.

But I escaped - with my life and now have a child of my own.

And I live and I promise to NEVER go home.

Dementia or old age I will not go and help her.

Call me what you like, I was never her daughter.

I have a father who loved me. A father who stayed.

And he bore so much more and It will never change.

As I still mourn my father taken from me so young.

I now mourn my mother, and the abuse she has done.

For she has forgotten it all, so it exists solely in me.

How I wish I could tell you, I wish you could see.

But to tell you would hurt you,

And I don’t want that.

I don’t want you to know,

That there’s people like that.

I will protect you from those,

That wish you harm.

I love you my son,

I love you my daughter.
