Backseat Crutches

Bridges Unburned

By Hannah HooperPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
....

Shaken, afraid,

Delusional, ashamed.

Crutch in the backseat,

My pain lured me to cheat.

Cheat I did picking up the crutch,

Not needing more than a slight nudge.

Relief from the pain for awhile I attained,

further injuries from the crutch use I gained.

We cheat on ourselves and our plan of recovery,

when we turn to what took all of our money.

To feed a habit so strong and cunning,

Not realizing what we are becoming.

All to fill the void and settle the thirst,

Quiet the volcano about to burst.

Settle the crawl within our skin.

And stop the uncontrolled quivering chin.

Rely on your instincts of remembrance,

That continued crutch use is a death sentence.

Join arms and hands with others in the trench,

Hang on for your life and mount a defense.
