At Attention

A Distracting Acrostic

By D. J. ReddallPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

Digital dreams distract from daily doldrums

Instantly, we can conjure cascades of characters who wish only to divert, stimulate, amuse

Sacrificing sustained somatic society for sparkling specters starves skin

Tantalus writhed insatiably, though the grapes of Hades looked sweet

Requiring our attention, machines have none to give us

Attend to the sound of tik, tok: this is the funeral dirge of lived time

Consider the screen, which reveals and conceals by definition; what hides behind it?

Take just a moment to fix your eyes upon nothing but this parade of phonemes across a vanilla void

Is it possible to look into just one window? How many are open before you now?

Only the value of attention increases as it grows rarer and shorter

Now that I’ve changed your I by holding your eye, see that all others do the same; practice parsimony
