Everybody's got that place they dream of,

The south: say it's peaceful and nice,

Just like Wilkes conjured up his love

For a life that was never quite right.

He is patient, gentle, and kind,

Everything they say a man should be.

But I can't say what's swirling in his mind.

Did he ever think of the poor boys like me?

Well, Mr. Wilkes, I think you have it wrong.

You're obsessed with keeping your honor.

Mr. Wilkes maybe you knew all along,

'Cause you never thought to fight for valor.

Some men like you, they have it all,

The rich hoarding wealth in their banks.

But I should tell you, that it all will fall,

Soon you're left with only blanks.

Oh, Ashley Wilkes what would you say

If you saw the world as it is today?

I'm not sure you'd would recognize this place,

But I'd pay to see the disgust on your face.

I'm not proper, don't think I'll ever be.

Ashley, can you see me?

I'm no gentleman, a boy with a bloodied hand,

And a promise to the friends I have.
