Ashes

A Poem

I've been crawling through the ashes for so long,
I don't know what it feels like
to not be burning.

When does this ache end?
When does the fire stop consuming
every inch of my soul?
When will I be whole?

I just want to find happiness
in the things that I love,
joy in my life again.

But I feel like this all-consuming fire
will never set me free,
and I will just burn into a crisp.

No phoenix rising,
just a pile of ash,
wishing that things could have been different,
that I'd have made better choices.

I wonder what it's like
to not feel like everything is on fire
and pretend that I'm fine.

I'm not fine.

I haven't been fine in a long time,
and the clock just keeps ticking
and ticking away
until someday
I don't wake up.
