April

Thoughts on an April day

By Laura DePacePublished about a year ago • 1 min read

It is said

“April showers bring May flowers.”

Such a hopeful perspective

On the grey, gloomy, cold, wet days

Of April.

Days and days of rain.

Or sometimes snow.

Is anything said

Of April snowstorms?

The flowers

That were fooled into blooming

In April,

Believing that it was Spring,

Bow their embattled heads

To the pounding rains.

Perhaps T.S. Eliot was closer

To the truth of April

When he said,

“April is the cruellest month.”

I sit at my window,

Wrapped in a blanket,

Wearing wool socks,

Feeling the cold

And the damp

And the darkness

Of this forbidding April.

The chill settles into

My very bones.

Will April ever end?

It is time

To leave the showers of April behind

And skip to the flowers of May.
