Like staggering home
Alone, after dark
Through streets which your
Feet recognise
But your brain does not.
-
Like sinking in quicksand
Or concrete
Or rich, wet mud
At your favourite park
One night.
-
Like recognising uniforms
And old faces up
On
missing posters.
-
Like feeling metal
Scrape your toes
When walking upon clouds.
-
Feeling your stomach churning,
But your body never learning
Why it is
That you live in so much fear.
-
Skipping the event
Because you know you’ll interfere.
-
Caught, there, in the sea
With no buoys to hold onto
And a slowly growing tide…
-
But it’s all inside your mind.
