Angel Meadow in Manchester Uk Poem

People stroll through Angel Meadow,

Children laughing while dogs run free,

Warm sun falling across the grass,

No thought for what lies underneath.

Beneath those paths are hidden graves,

Layer on layer pushed down deep,

Thousands buried without a name,

Souls with no peace left there to keep.

Long ago the streets stood packed,

Little brick homes side by side,

Smoke hung thick above the roofs,

While sickness spread and people died.

Cholera moved from door to door,

Typhoid stole both young and old,

Church bells rang through dirty streets,

Stories ended before they were told.

Women sat outside their homes,

Watching children play nearby,

Men walked cobbles dressed in black,

Factory smoke filled up the sky.

Babies taken far too soon,

Workers broken down by years,

Families lowered into pits,

Ground soaked heavy with their tears.

Many buried without stones,

No flowers left and no prayers said,

Time moved on and names were lost,

While more were placed among the dead.

Now the park looks calm and bright,

Trees stand tall where graves once grew,

Lovers sit on weathered benches,

Never knowing what they walk through.

Still the place feels strange at night,

Cold air drifting through the dark,

Footsteps seem to follow close,

Whispers moving through the park.

Maybe souls still wander there,

People lost and left behind,

Watching life move on above,

While history slips from every mind.
