And The Newborn Baby Cried My Tears

The room was quiet, the lights were low,
Outside the window the rain began to flow,
I held that baby close to me,
And wondered who they were going to be.

They opened their eyes and looked at mine,
As though they knew me from another time,
Then suddenly they began to cry,
And I felt the tears come to my eyes.

I wondered if they felt my pain,
The things I’d lost, the years of rain,
The broken dreams I kept inside,
The lonely nights I tried to hide.

I held them close against my chest,
And whispered softly, You deserve the best,
You won’t have to carry what I knew,
I’ll do my best to protect you.

But as they cried, I cried there too,
Because their little face somehow knew,
The tears I’d hidden for so long,
The tears I’d swallowed to stay strong.

I thought about the life ahead,
The little feet beside my bed,
The first word spoken, first step made,
The little memories we would create.

Perhaps their tears were not my pain,
Perhaps they were a brand new rain,
A chance to wash the past away,
And bring a little light to day.

So I kissed their forehead, soft and warm,
And promised shelter through every storm,
For though they cried the tears I knew,
I hoped their life would be brighter too.

And as they slowly drifted to sleep,
I made a promise I would keep,
I’d give them all the love I could,
And change the things I wished I could.
