And So We Soared, Together
A sestina inspired by an art workshop I facilitated for people with dementia. The theme was work.
AND SO WE SOARED, TOGETHER
Today I heard of lives where work was full
of colour: saffron corn collected light
from ox-red sunsets, azure folds of sky
cupped bales of white and grey, while memories
began to harvest flights, real, imagined,
all believed, and leaving vapour trails.
Above the fields cut through with umbered trails,
ploughed ruts that caught the autumn rain, a full
moon medal, proud with sleeping memories,
strung upon a braid of colour, the light
reflecting days and nights of rare imagined
honour, duty, selfless service to the sky.
Some days, vermillion fingers pinned the sky
with sheets so cobalt white the glow caused trails
that led to secret stores of memories
piled high, with records, books and photos, full
shelves, their ochre-ed labels brightened, as light
made real what some only thought imagined.
Today, lime green butterflies, imagined
places, fresh-framed in pink, with lemon sky
dabbed on with coral sponges, held so light
in rainbow-ed fingers, bright acrylic trails
laid down on print now out of date, but full
of life, once present times, now memories.
Soon, above the scene, crystal memories:
office laughter, arguments, imagined
romance, shortages and wealth, buses full
of dreamers. Full tales and fragments, a sky-
flown flutter, not black and white, but trails
of glorious colour turning dark to light.
Then sparks appeared, at first sporadic, light
connected gestures, new-fanned memories,
stained delicately, dove-grey satin trails
of time and place, now fresh imagined,
brushed in between the ocean and the sky.
And patterns formed. Soon the page was full,
And life was woven light, re-imagined
times, memories transparent as the sky,
yet dense as forest trails, and just as full.
