AN ODE TO BOLERO: when gold melts

04/27/26

'Bolero is a style of dance originated in Spain around the 1700s

and translated into song form by Cuban artists in the 1880s. This

touches on the latter, particularly from an album/cd titled

"Bolero de Madrugada-Cuando La Habana Suspira" the pic on the cover

is B/W of a beautiful singer with 3 musicians behind her but the voice!'

I listened..

mouth agape..mesmerized

A voice of gold as she sang..

What does that mean?

A Golden Voice?

But she did not sing

As much as..

Narrated ambrosia

Each letter wrapped in honey..

a promise to taste heaven

There are powerful voices

Like thunder

That one feels in the bones

Crushes the chest with upheaval

Makes ones eyes water.

She narrated lullabies to my soul

Whispered power,

Latent..

And intoxicating

Power so quiet..

So resolute..

That upon awakening from the spell

You give thanks

And await her next

narration..

And surrender.
