An Image of War World I

Imagine yourself being a soldier.

Wake up!

Can you see?

They're falling down on their knees.

Lying on the ground with blood falling down their cheeks.

Listen up!

Are you deaf?

From a distance you can hear them,

Soldiers yelling in miserable pain.

On the land they called, “No Man’s land."

Cover up!

Did you inhale it?

It kills upon inhalation or contact.

Make sure your mask is secured

Or else it will burn.

They called it, “Chemical warfare.”

Look away!

Get up!

Run away!

World War I has just begun.

About the Poem

I recall having to write a poem of World War I for my World History class, my sophomore year. I also do remember staring at the white board in front of the classroom, not knowing what to think. But, I thought to myself what if I were to put myself in their shoes for a moment and think of every agonizing experience they had to go through to survive. Day after day, each word came together and it became a sentence, in which my thoughts were now being heard. Moreover, writing the experiences of what a soldier would have went through gives the reader an image of what it was like during that time period.
