An Afternoon at the Rock

Poetic memoir of a special photography trip

Amtrak California's Capitol Corridor passing through Hercules, June 2020

Calming, gentle breeze gusts in between us standing on a gigantic rock,

the sloshing of the tiny waves crashing gently into the shores of the lake,

the laughter and conversations of people nearby decorating as a train’s near approaching the block,

“capturing this ideal shot ought to be a piece of cake,”

Time put on an imaginary “pause” for me to enjoy the “now,”

nothing but sunlight in the late afternoon in each second fleeing,

my friends and I enjoying each other’s company in the moments that allow,

the nose of a futuristic locomotive coming around the corner peaking

The grinding rails saturate our eardrums while the service is sent sprinting,

the engineer behind the controls sends a welcoming horn show,

“Wonder what this photograph would look like if I sent it printing?”

tried my hardest to make sure this footage doesn’t blow

Another service passing through Hercules headed to Sacramento, June 2020

Sprinting wheels on the commuter service carrying it out of sight,

Lightly crashing waves blended in the far foreground as it rounds the bend,

the glowing colors from the sun brought the colors out bright,

Secretly had hoped that this evening would never end

Not much time passed before another set of bilevels came around,

We hung out closer to the edge which another “photo line” would be set up,

“Wondering if the editing for this photograph would keep it bound…”

the train came around the curves of the trackage built around the lake as the engineer honked the horn for a couple while the guy said “what's up?”

As if the engineer was going to answer back while on the clock,

another glorious photograph taken from my creative eye to take in stock.
