Amiss, A mess

Rocket Ships and Supernovas

By Ben SmithPublished 5 years ago • 1 min read

Amiss, A mess

I stared at myself deep inside the mirrored reflection, expecting the usual brand of off-kilter emotions and sorrow.

But instead of meeting myself with a pitiful gaunt, I decided to look ahead.

So far ahead, that my eyes they did strain.

Until my star of an awaiting supernova shone forth and pierced my gaze.

Are you the future? thought I, as the tap turned hot and steamed my lens.

Unveiled it was: A life I could call my home,

Without the burdens of hand-me-down doubts and fears.

He seemed happy, he seemed free.

Yet this being of mine with joy-pours from pores anew

Was not the mere me that me had once knew.

The box I slept in held no room for such notions,

Only enough air to stay alive, but never to feel it as well.

So I turned steam into fire, and decided to burn the box down

In hopes of fueling a rocketed adventure into space.

Halfway to the atmosphere, my navigators head back down to Earth

I was furious, as they given me my chance at escape

Then pulled the rug out from under me.

How dare you keep a supernova like me down?

I’ve seen my cosmic being of ebb and flow!

How dare you not allow me to fly?

They were senseless calls

Not for the lack of radio or oxygen tanks

But for the sole fact my energy was misguided

I burned when I should’ve blessed

I’ve hurt when I should’ve caressed

There is no space besides what I create for myself, my perfect home.
