“amethyst”
by Jacquelynne Faith
the girl you put in your pocket-
the villain in your story
blooms while you sleep like morning glory
serving justice on silver spoons
she’s the metaphors you miss
embellishments on swords
she’s amethyst
compassion never meant warm
strength never meant cool
so she’s somewhere between red and blue
she’s unfamiliar fusion
half bleeding heart, half iron fist
she’s sharp and soothing,
amethyst.
she’s galaxies and mountains
sunsets born inside a storm
everlasting amaranthine in a mortal form
more magic than a mirror
she’s the smoke and the mist
like fossils and Figment
purple, amethyst
she’s like lavender lightning
or something like the sea
she’s thundering tranquility
she is made of lilac light
but she won’t bend for it
maybe she’s ultraviolet,
electric amethyst
beyond the spectrum of your tropes
from ethereal land
and people fear what they don’t understand
she makes ash and pixie dust
be careful what you wish
she’s extra and terrestrial
more than amethyst.
it’s easy to forget the sun when you see a purple moon
she’s a prism of the hues you miss when you close a book too soon.
