American Beauty

wild roses

By Harper Lewis Published 5 months ago 1 min read

my favorite Grateful Dead studio album grows in my yard,

there, peeking out through the honeysuckle and blackberry brambles,

every May, there’s a burst of color near the vacant lot.

I like a flower that grows wild, says

fuck you and your cultivation

I’m free and I’m me.

Watch out for my thorns

if you attempt to pluck me,

better to let me keep living

life on the vine. You didn’t

bring me here, so don’t

take me from here. You

may as well be a Canada Goose

in the South Fork River,

heckling herons.

American Beauty.
