In the dark,
I walk alone.
I’ve never been afraid of the night.
Not when there’s so much light.
But the I feel the hair on my neck
Peeling up along my spine.
I’m not alone.
Out here in the dark.
I can hear the breathing
Sharp inhales and out.
The off shuffle step and stomp
That’s making my heart drop.
Do I turn around and fight?
Or run off in a fright?
Maybe I ought to keep walking
Acting like it’s a normal night.
They always say,
Not to engage.
But I’ve also been taught not to walk
Alone at night.
It doesn’t really matter.
That I’m strong and independent.
Not when I’m alone.
Or not so alone.
I got so use to it.
That now it’s happening
And I don’t know what to do
Not even a clue.
Don’t turn around.
Don’t turn around.
‘Hey miss’ the voice slithers
I don’t even udder a sound.
Don’t turn around.
It’s my new mantra.
Don’t turn around.
For the stranger who comes out at night.
