After the Parade
A poem about protesting
At the parade, the protest rages
in solidarity with strangers.
At the parade, the hope surges
for the possibility of change.
At the parade, the energy sizzles
as we share the brutal truths.
Yes, our waters are polluted.
Yes, our parks are under fire.
Yes, our wildlife is dwindling.
Yes, our planet is dying.
Let’s make a difference.
After the parade, optimism fades
as a neighbor chops another tree.
After the parade, lies are revealed
as another manatee washes to shore.
After the parade, tears are hidden
as a family member bastes another bird.
No, it is not your life to take.
No, it is not your water to poison.
No, it is not your land to steal.
No, there is not another home.
Let’s try again.
When’s the next parade?
