After M
(After ‘The Portrait of Mr M’ by Shusaku Arakawa)
Flash memory takes the stage,
Foolish me,
And a fear of losing you
Draws my hand around the page.
No fuss, no fanfaron,
The shadow memory
Invisible
Head on
Nonchalant and bright
I etch you back again,
An outline,
as my mind puts up a fight.
Your structure intact
I rebuild once more
Separating
Memory from fact.
(This piece was written as part of an exercise using visual art to inspire poetry. The piece I chose was 'The Portrait of Mr M' by Shusaku Arakawa, and I tried to follow the artists technique of sketching very faintly, and allowing the viewer to fill in the rest. This was another exercise from the Red Sky Sessions course run by Apples and Snakes)
