Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy
Negative Space Challenge

I used to have a life
I used to draw Smiley face emoji's for my wife's poems
I used to do gardening for exotic plants
But All That Changed on June 21, 2026
I went to the doctors on June 19
They diagnosed me with an allergic reaction
They gave me some medication, and told me to come back to the walk in if I wasn't better the next day
Everything Changed On June 21, 2026
I wasn't better the next day
So I went to the walk in, - I had a swelled tongue, and she said the doctor had the right diagnosis
She said if I wasn't better to go to the Emergency Room, the next day
Everything Changed on June 21, 2026
I spent 14 days on a ventilator, 17 days in the hospital
I was treated with donor Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVlg), while hospitalized.
I improved with this treatment. Then the two neurologists left.
Everything Changed on June 21, 2026
they then removed my breathing tube
I did okay to the dismay of the residents
I was breathing on my own but what is next
Everything Changed on June 21, 2026
I was discharged on the seventeenth day
And sent home to my wife's care
she cries everyday
Everything Changed on June 21, 2026
I don't know what will happen to me
Can I beat this disease
are they treating me for the correct illness?
Everything changed on June 21, 2026
I went to the neurologist on Wednesday September 23,2026
she begged them for the medication that treated Myasthenia Gravis
However, was that the right illness, the medication didn't work
Everything changed on June 21, 2026
per the internet, they said if it was the wrong illness, you would not see a difference
are they treating the wrong illness
my wife cries when she gives me the half of a pill
Everything changed on June 21, 2026
will I ever draw Smiley Emoji's again
will I ever walk again
will my wife's tears ever stop
Everything changed on June 21, 2026
To be honest, my wife wrote this poem. I don't even have the coordination to use a cell phone, no. less a computer.
She said she had an idea in hand where I can get my mobility back. She writes letters to the physicians (once a writer always a writer), and marks them personal and confidential, and they worked before.
Maybe oh maybe it will work this time. I hope for my wife's sake as well as mine. they will find a diagnosis and a treatment for the disease I have that almost took my life.
Time will tell.
This was written by Susan Payton, my wife of 37 years.
