Above the Mill

McGalliard Falls

By Harper Lewis Published 8 days ago • 1 min read

Headed west on 40 today,

westward and upward,

a green ridge of forest

on the horizon,

wheels careening down the lane,

mountain momentum in full force,

coasting at 70 round the serpentine sway of highway,

down to the river off the exit,

backwards through time

to a grist mill with a water wheel.

Above the falls, a leaning tree,

uprooted incompletely,

another growing

out of a crevice in the shoals.

I feel their spirits inside me,

bending instead of breaking,

finding everything needed,

life sustained

after the storm.
