A wizard knows how easy magic is

How mere thought can make things and unmake them

How each, carefully chosen word of his

Can heal a wound, or unleash dark mayhem

All of this must be concealed from plain folk

If word got out, spells would be cast for free!

Minds and lives can be altered by a joke;

Hiding the truth improves the wizard's fee

He knows that songs have broken nations' hearts

He has read poems brighter than the dawn

He's seen insults cut dragons into parts

He understands that words best fearsome brawn

A wizard knows both meanings of spelling

Worlds are built and burned by storytelling

Ekphrastic
