A Whimsical World of Insanity

Step inside the whimsical world of insanity,
A strange little circus called life and humanity,
It’s quick and it’s witty, it’s bad and it’s pretty,
So step through the doorway and enter our city.

Come take a stride and enjoy the ride,
But keep hold of something and mind how you glide,
For sanity’s waiting somewhere outside,
And once you come in, there’s nowhere to hide.

The trapeze artists swing on the wires up high,
While monkeys in dresses go sailing on by,
An elephant trumpets, but which one’s the liar?
As feathers and foolishness fly ever higher.

A signpost is pointing wherever you go,
Oo
If you pass, you come in and we’ll give you some more,
If you fail, you’re the guinea pig waiting next door.

The beautiful monkey stands ready to start,
With experiments planned like some questionable art,
The pig gives a squeal and decides he should run,
But around here insanity’s only begun.

The ringmaster smiles with a twirl of his tash,
“I told you, my friends, you should give it a bash,”
Then Freddy steps out on the highest of wires,
While underneath everybody gasps and perspires.

One monkey sits proudly upon his left side,
Another sits right, looking terrified-eyed,
The baby hangs tight as the feathers take flight,
And Freddy starts bouncing with all of his might.

He jumps and he twizzles high into the air,
Then lands on his head — but the monkeys are there,
He rolls both his eyes as his strange act reveals
That somehow this madman has suddenly got wheels.

Across the high wire the lunatic rolls,
While somewhere below him the circus bell tolls,
The audience screams, then they cheer with delight,
For nobody’s witnessed such madness tonight.

The people stand up — a standing ovation,
For the best damn circus that’s been in the nation,
The ringmaster twirls round his finger his tash,
And says, “Told you all — it was worth giving a bash.”

Satisfied now that they’ve laughed with delight,
He says, “That’s it, folks. The show’s over. Goodnight.”
He bows very low as the final lights fall,
Then twirls his handkerchief high over all.

The handkerchief floats to the sawdust-strewn floor,
And everyone knows there is surely no more,
The big top falls silent, not even a sound—

Till tomorrow, when sanity
once again
hits the ground.
