A Watery Death At Sea

Down, down, down

A Watery Death At Sea

Morning broke with nothing to suggest an ending,

The sky spread wide in a calm, unbroken blue,

Work began as it always had before,

Routine holding steady against the open water.

The change came slowly, almost kindly at first,

A shift in wind that barely drew attention,

Small waves rising with quiet persistence,

Building into something that could not be ignored.

The deck grew uncertain beneath steady feet,

Balance lost in ways that could not be regained,

Hands reached for anything that might hold firm,

Finding only movement where strength was needed.

The sea rose higher with each passing moment,

Taking more than it gave with every breath,

Voices strained against a wind that would not listen,

Each call swallowed before it could be heard.

Water claimed its place without hesitation,

Rushing in where it had never been before,

Filling every space with cold and force,

Leaving no path that led back to safety.

There was no ground to return to once it began,

No edge to reach, no line to follow home,

Only open sea stretching without end,

A vastness that offered nothing in return.

What followed left no trace for those who searched,

No marker drifting back toward the shore,

Just the knowledge carried in quiet understanding,

That some are taken where none can ever return.
