A Time to Heal

Recovering from Hate

By Dan R FowlerPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

A Time to Heal

Along life’s journey, we crawl and walk and run,

From cradle and through life’s challenges until it's all done.

Yet between the battles fought by some,

Dwells a fascination as to who they have become.

From hated to loved and all in levels we’ve seen,

Perhaps at the finish line a tallying of what’s been.

A scoring of some sort, a record of deeds done,

Will finally reveal the account’s balances for some.

When as children we sought so much to obey,

The words of those around us, some even until today.

Yet, over the years the advice has all disappeared,

Having been replaced by experiences makes things more clear.

Was it the chiding and bullying that swayed the lives of some,

To assume everyone was like those who shot verbal guns?

I dare say some would repent of their nastiness to others,

If their life had been a reflection of those not their brothers.

Over many decades people carry this luggage,

Filled with slanderous comments and other’s dirty garbage.

Chances are the offenders will never remember,

The accosting offenses, negative thoughts, and pointed fingers.

Now in the latter part of life often called December,

With its glitz and glitter, tender words to surrender.

May those who’ve preached it’s better to forgive,

React to their own words, repenting for life lived.

Many memories have all but disappeared,

But echoes flow like waves into my ears.

I wanted to forget the ugliness of that time,

But it has been with me so long, those who were unkind.

In waning years, forgiveness I’ve shown,

Fighting human desires because we reap what is sown.

Gone forever in the minds of those committing the infractions,

Unable to remember the depth of their actions.

T’is the season of gift giving, tinsel, and lights,

That fills each home in an attempt to make things right.

And, having remembered and resolved deep within,

To never surrender to the pain that bound me again.
