A soldier and his steed
Anzac day commemoration
As over the hill they go
Marching step by step
Bayonet by his side
Beloved four-legged friend in tow
The sun rises high
O'er the fog filled damned sky
As the blackest clouds start to spread
The winds whisper of bloodshed ahead
As a signal to heed
Echoes out from afar
Artillery sounds
Make their way through the scrub
Bayonet bullets
Rain down like hail stones
And men are heard dying
Afraid and alone
But the four legged friend
Remains by his side
To keep dutiful watch,
Keep him safe in his stride
A deafening sound is heard
Overhead
And as the steed collapses
Throws off his beloved friend
The trusted soldier stays
By his friend's side
As the soil transforms
Into pools of dark red
And thanks him for his service
With a tender kiss upon his head
Whilst distracted
By his loyal friend's demise
A bullet ricochets off a rock
And strikes the soldier by surprise
And as they both lay side by side
Breathing their last breath to its agonal end
The brave and honourable soldier
And his valiant four-legged friend
