A Reaping

Those arms never felt like home.

Like a bird in a locked cage that can no longer sing.

Foreign, familiar hands.

I lay next to a stranger at night.

Beside the new me and old me.

Present me.

Listening at midnight.

Crows singing lullabies for warnings.

A death toll rings.

The reaper says they all must pay.

A life for a life.

Speak curses and you curse yourself.

Bless the woman who holds her tongue.

She prays instead of spilling blood on an altar too full to contain the wrath.

Angry egregious stains.

As above so below.

To dust we return.

In dust we began.
