a poem with plastic eyes
i probably won't finish this poem,
i'll lift a few lines from another
incomplete piece. & so the transposition
continues & i don't know how to write
myself out of it. look at this word, hanging
like bait on a hook, fishing for something
that is not language. metaphorically
speaking, what is this poem about? nothing,
it's an unnatural kind of poetry, a poem
with plastic eyes, a line written like a…
what's the word? do you remember
the blanket that day? hanging on the line
like cotton shreds of memory
trapped like wind in curtains?

Cactus
We wax surfboards, watch each other take steep drops and catch waves that run like glass across the entirety of the bay. We pretend we aren’t scared. We wear wetsuits and zinc and ignore shadows passing underneath. We laugh at getting wiped-out. We become familiar with the seals swimming and playing in the line-up. We can no longer feel where our own skin ends and the ocean’s skin begins. We watch the surf at sunrise. We check the surf until sunset. We learn with haste not to surf when onshore seals congregate.

I AM
This is not who I thought I would be. Before my family was captured and forced into slavery, I had aspirations of becoming a wealthy business owner or possibly a scholar and philosopher. Becoming a warrior was the furthest thing from my mind. Unfortunately, our Roman conquerors had other plans.
