A Phantasmal Whimsy
To dream beyond dreams
A thousand white-hot burning suns
Explode behind my eyes.
So suddenly I start awake,
And gasp in my surprise.
-
The ceiling melts away from view,
Exposing stars so bright;
Leaving behind a rainbow ghost
Of shimmering spectral light.
-
The blazing comets trace their paths
Across the open sky;
And as they crash, I lie in bed
And watch them brightly die.
-
Ancient oaks spring from the earth.
Their limbs reach out to me.
Their linen leaves rustle about
As floor gives way to sea.
-
I roll and rock upon the waves;
I’m cast this way and that.
I sail past giant sea creatures
And tip my pirate hat.
-
An earthquake shakes the ocean brine
And stars fall down like rain.
The neon sea of wistful sleep
Soon takes me down again.
-
I lie inside my darkened room
And stare up at the moon.
She paints me in her silver light
As nightjars sing their tune.
-
I close my eyes but still I see;
My waking dream goes on.
And so I sleep and dream some more;
Until my night is dawn.
