A paean to one city

A poem

I have locked my fond memories away in cities –
in places where there was no one but me.
I wandered alone, looking through the eyes of an explorer,
much the way a small child might.
Though I had long since ceased to be a child;
my adult eyes were heavy with the sadness of lost battles.
And even though I felt shattered deep within,
on the surface, this new reality gave me wings,
revealing worlds beyond imagination –
a tapestry of various cities
I had never visited before:
New York, Madrid, Barcelona, Oslo, Helsinki,
Las Vegas, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Baltimore.
Each played its part in this one, ultimate story,
where every meaning folded into an endless loop,
leading me precisely to where I am today.
No one else sees it yet, only I do.
Am I fortunate?
Or perhaps cursed?
Or could it be both?
I make no complaint, so long as I keep moving forward,
against all the odds.
Others do not see what I see,
they do not feel what I feel.
Despite my sincerity, despite my good intentions…
Forgive me, my dears,
but I must now close all the doors and windows
and get back to work.
