A little boat drifting on the grey, grey sea,

Still holds its course though land, it draws it near.

My heart creaks on for what could never be.

.

The tide drags murmurs from the deep to me—

Old vows dissolved in brine before they clear.

A little boat drifting on the grey, grey sea,

.

Your face surfaces in every crest I see,

A pale reflection sharpened by my fear.

My heart creaks on for what could never be.

.

The days move on, indifferent in their spree,

Yet grief keeps circling back, sincere, severe—

A little boat drifting on the grey, grey sea,

.

The gulls cry out their raw soliloquy,

A lamentation only I can hear.

My heart creaks on for what could never be.

.

And so it swims, that endless part of me,

Afloat in longing, tethered to this sphere—

A little boat drifting on the grey, grey sea.

My heart creaks on for what could never be.
