A Lantern Through The Mists…
A lantern light poem
A well-trod road beneath my feet
A path I know as well as my own face
Mist curls thick, an old friend to greet
In this wild and desolate place
Somewhere nearby, a lantern light
Flickers and bobs amid the cold cloud
A guide through the murky night
Should I stay the course through this chill damp shroud?
“Stick to the path!”, I had always been told
“No matter what tries to lure you astray!”
Lantern light flickers, warm in the cold
My feet carry me home, as the light moves away.
In the morning we hear of a traveller drowned
Who followed a light away from solid ground…
The form I used here is a Shakespearean, or English, Sonnet, consisting of three quatrains or paired lines, and a rhyming couplet in the form ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
I’m not sure that this was quite what the prompt intended, but it’s October and I just got back from a trip to the UK, which has all kinds of fun mythology about lantern-carrying spirits luring the unwary to their doom…
