A Kite That Landed on Mars

My father showed me how to make a kite,

with string and wood and paper.

So I did a pretty picture and brought staples

for the paper, for the frame.

I decorated it and painted it,

put strings on with made paper bows.

And they trailed for quite a long, long way,

longer than normal trails on a kite goes.

I took it out and waited.

There was no wind for days.

And just as I decided to stop,

the sun withdrew its blaze.

The clouds rolled by.

First the trees started to sway, a little more,

then more.

And before I knew it, that kite was up,

going higher and higher than ever before,

than I'd ever seen a kite go before.

It went on and on.

I'm sure it went past the moon and the sun,

way, way up beyond the stars.

I think myself it might have landed near Jupiter,

or on Mars.

Cause I got out my telescope to try and find my kite,

and it was a lovely, clear and special,

starry, starry night.

But the telescope just spotted a little black dot on Mars.

I'm sure it had a string with paper bows,

and pictures on the paper of cars.

So maybe I did that.

Maybe I was the first one to land anything on Mars.

I don't suppose I'll ever know

till they go up exploring and come back

with my kite bits all in jars.

But for now I'll take the credit.

I made a kite, a kite that landed on Mars,

with pretty bows and paper decorated

with beautiful cars.
