A Jungle in My Mind

Things are growing that are all wrong

A Jungle in My Mind

There's a jungle growing inside of my head,

Where flowers remember the words that you said,

The trees have got faces, the rivers have eyes,

And monkeys throw memories into the skies.

A lion sits crying beneath a blue tree,

He tells me he's lonely, he's lonely like me,

His mane is made out of the letters you wrote,

And your last goodbye is stuck deep in his throat.

A parrot keeps shouting that love never dies,

While wearing your glasses and telling me lies,

He sleeps in a teapot suspended by string,

And dreams of the wedding that never took wing.

The elephants wander through yesterday's rain,

Their trunks full of photographs dripping with pain,

One carries your laughter, another your smile,

They ask me to follow for one final mile.

A crocodile swallowed the moon in his sleep,

Then cried silver tears that were terribly deep,

He told me your kisses were floating downstream,

But when I went looking, they turned to a dream.

The butterflies whisper your name in the dark,

While strange little creatures eat love from the bark,

A zebra with wings and a heart made of glass,

Keeps asking why beautiful memories don't last.

I found an old cottage inside of a tree,

Where yesterday's lovers were waiting for me,

They sat drinking sorrow from cups made of rain,

And asked if I'd ever be happy again.

A snake wearing slippers came sliding along,

He sang me the words of our favourite song,

Then wrapped himself gently around my poor heart,

And told me that loving was tearing it apart.

The jungle went silent, the creatures all knew,

That somewhere inside it I still searched for you,

I called through the branches, the darkness replied,

That love hadn't left me, it simply had died.

So I'll live in this jungle, this strange world of mine,

Where sorrow grows roses on yesterday's vine,

And if you should find me, don't ask where I've been,

I've been lost in the madness of loving a dream.
