A GHOST IN THE VEIN (6-14-2018)

I was listening to Johnny Cash's version of HURT. When the Lyric "the needle tears a hole" came up, I remembered this poem. Addiction has a cost. The addicted don't care but it is not intentional. It is a type of 'don't care' that is forced on one by addiction. The biggest HURT is those that love the addict. There is no escape-even when you disown or erase that person from your life. It doesn't happen. I just don't know how to explain that kind of pain. Writing a poem was the only way I could try.

The snake,

slithers and slides,

smooth,

undulates.

It makes its way through...

pushes,

opens a path not meant to go..

Skin pops open,

as the snake shushes quietly past..

akin to the undetected sound through tall grass.

Only you know you let it in.

Or do you?

So many forms has this vicious little snake..

You think yourself immune?

Because you hate needles,

you think yourself safe..

there is no snake can take you unaware!

is what we think..

as we slip some money in a slot..

pull upon a chance to win.

There is no snake quiet enough..

Is there?

And you wonder where your lighter has gone,

as your cigarette dies out.

Still,

no snake goes unobserved..

unanswered..

past our defenses,

even of pastor or priest..

as he reaches over the latest conquest for clothes

now stained!

Time for the sermon
