It’s a funny way of looking at life – those
birthdays and holidays; Christmas turkey
and New Year’s punch. Cake and muffins,
or a kick in the head. You brought me a present
but just remembered you don’t like
me anymore.

We mark our lives with milestones.
He’s two, she’s thirty-two, and Bob uses a cane
now. Wish him well or to go to hell. He never
returned the rake he borrowed. Or
said he was sorry.

It’s funny how love fades, who would have
thought. Supposed to last forever, while
we dance cheek to cheek, not scowling
across the dancefloor, laughing and
crying in turns – life does that, doesn’t it?

Ask me in December, what it’s been like.
The highs, the lows, the upsides downs
and inside outs – all of it, marked in cards
and gift boxes neatly wrapped, then put away.
