Teeth bared, feet on the ground,

Baited breath that makes no sound

Hearts beat for a moment as one

Hunter and prey and a low, dying sun.

Night’s veil, twilight’s chill,

The hunted’s fear and the stalker’s thrill.

A flash of white, a flash of eyes,

The chase is on ‘neath blackened skies.

One hungers for life, one hungers for blood,

The cold drip of purpose and terror’s fast flood.

A trip and a stumble, a gather and leap,

A bite and a miss and a slow, stalking creep

A ravine in the darkness,

Backed into the corner,

The deer’s caught in his teeth,

With no one to mourn her.

The wolf bows his head and bears a red grin,

For the rush of the chase and the blood on his chin.

The moon looks down through a cloud-dappled veil,

And he sings to her fiercely his victorious tale.
