The door of Summer slams behind your back.

The air is snapping cold and goosebumps rake

your skin. A falling leaf's serrated edge

aflame in red and orange hues—it falls

to shatter underfoot. Where will you go?

The sidewalk ended ages back. Your fears

as company; they match you pace for pace,

a growing shadow as the sun descends.

The leaves that crunch beneath your feet in time

will be the mulch beneath the winter snow.
