A dove flies out to find a perch

and comes back empty-handed

time and time and time again

Flying the nest, you search for purchase

Mountain tops and river beds

are all you know, until

you pull my carcass from the earth

on which you landed,

new from where you’ve been

My skin’s akin to burning furnace

Stay-behinds and go-aheads

filled my veins to force me still

A new beginning, a virgin birth,

no longer stranded

Freedom from the sin

Grasped between your lips with purpose

you’ve finally found new life to spread

Now the dove will not return, I will
