A Difference of Opinion

Walk a mile with a new guide

She was questioned heavily within her beliefs,

In fact she is her greatest opposition,

Disbelieving of the thoughts that cross her mind,

Built on disbelief and suspicion.

***

When they asked if she believes that angels grace our land,

She replied in deference, “The innocent that walk in truth,

The downtrodden that begs on the corner, the elderly that forget,

And the teenagers that rebel in the uncouth,

These are the angels that have fallen from above,

Testing the waters of human affinity,

Misguiding our race is by divine plan,

Although there are a select few proof of human divinity.”

***

She whispers this quietly to the one that asked,

As she has no need of a soapbox existence,

Her beliefs are hers to pave the way of her destiny,

And she welcomes the battles of least resistance.

***

She shoulders the cryptic cosmos of torture and pain,

Wandering the world of the insane as planned,

Gossip heralded amongst those that have fallen,

Where society has mistakenly whipped and banned.

***

It is these very individuals that understand the lay of the land,

With eyes wide open they visit behind the veil,

She escorts them to the source of the truth,

Laying the paved roads with illusions and blackmail.

***

Tomorrow is made up of the pretence of control,

Hallucinations of grandeur of the so called sane,

However the randomness of the days in happenstance,

The metaphorical ball and chain.

***

She asks that you walk with the wounded for a time or two,

Blistered feet abound in their mangled shoes,

Feel the pain, the insanity, the misguided dreams,

And ponder the realms of another’s views.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Yes this is veryyyy true and important too. We should always try to learn why people are a certain way or have certain opinions rather than being narrow minded. Loved your poem!

  • This invitation to compassionate care & understanding is compelling. My favorite stanzas are the second & last.

So beautiful! I have often thought of the adage: Before you judge, walk in my shoes. This reminds me that we will never know enough about another person to fully understand their feelings. All we can really do is be there should they fall so we can catch them.
