A demon visits the month of madness

because there is a brutality and a sickness to the rampant consumerism of Halloween

It’s getting brisk,

Just chilly enough to cuddle and flirt

So conjure me now with a handful of dirt

Etch my name on your belly

With charcoal from your hearth

And some centipede jelly

Mix in a potion of sulfur and worms

Pinch them in half,

Squeeze them out as they squirm

Then

Once all the spells are laid

Press your back upon the stones of my altar

Then shiver 8 times

And you won’t be alone any longer

Once you count october in your bones

I will wriggle up through the crust

To make your arms my new home

I’ll whisper so gently, I’ll nibble your neck

I’ll suck down a mouthful of warmth

So that I may feel a little bit less like a corpse

When we go out

We’ll wear our faces plain:

You’ll be my witch and I’ll be your damned

Well blend right in with the day’s social scenes

As we lurk among the masked folk of Halloween

And look how they scurry and smile,

How they line up by rank and by file

To browse and shop for their plastic tombstones and skulls

And meanwhile; we shall browse for a victim who seems the least dull

Listen now as they chant and they scamper

And at their feet cinnamon dusts are scattered

Like magic salt circles laid under toe

But these people seem not to know

That we are the principalities and we are the powers

Who can reach out and pluck them like jimsonweed flowers

So let’s blend in

Let’s pretend to giggle like little kids

We’ll fake-sip spiced lattes as we creep to the farms

There we’ll pick the pumpkins we’d most like to harm

And isn’t it fun?

Isn’t it grand?

To slice them open

And sift their guts in our hands?

Squish

Cut an eye here

Cut a nose there

Cut shallow

Cut deep

And cut everywhere

This is about us and this is about joy

So let us play

And let us prey

With very sharp toys

For me a knife and for you a saw

And whatever tools we may, to follow the Infernal Law

We’ll harvest our trophies with surgical care

An incision here, and excision there

For every wicked tool can be put to good use

A claw-hammer, some nails

Some skewers and screws

These freaky little pumpkins will take the abuse

Let’s mutilate this one, and stab that one too

When I meet your eyes over the carnage and gore

You’ll know that

I

Love

You

Sugar, won’t you give me a smile and a little more pain?

Wipe their fluids from your palms

Fling their entrails down the drain

And let all their juices puddle with never a qualm

Then we’ll share in some love so sweet

While out there, luckier fools trick-or-treat

One more cuddle, quick before we run out of time

Soon now, the bells will clang and chime

Then we’ll know: October is almost spent

And we’ll moan, groan, and wonder where our time went

Ah how it hurts to see the threat of dawn,

I’ll hold you close, clack my teeth, and then yawn

And then we’ll both tremble

To see the calendar once more turn to November

Then like a breath I’ll be gone from the earth

But do not bother to sing me a dirge

Just scoop my ashes back into my grave

And then in solitude I’ll patiently wait

For have no fear my spooky little dear

I’ll come back hungry as ever…

Same time next year?
