A Broken Shell Of Raw Agony

You did your best but the fight has won

Gone in a blink of an eye, unexpectedly,

A heart broken, peeled open on display,

Raw grief overflowing, worse than broken,

Physically traumatised, emotionally torn.

***

You attempt to hold on to faith and hope,

Although the devastation ripped you apart,

Broken, bleeding and bloody, so naked,

Unprepared, shocked and lost in disbelief.

***

Every breath is violently expelled, gasping,

The hollow in your chest expands in pain,

Silent screams echo in your ears and heart,

Knowing you will never feel whole again.

***

Aching for the relief of a fresh breath of air,

Wanting to escape the senseless reality,

Questioning the cause, dream or nightmare,

Understanding you’ve lost it all forevermore.

***

Thoughts scrambling, possibilities explored,

Searching constantly for a lesser heartache,

Blood pounding through your mind, roaring,

As you move to forget, deny, unaccepting.

***

Tears streaming, the terror tearing through,

Absolving every inch of previous happiness,

Excruciating agony crushing you from above,

Every cell begging for the ultimate ending.

***

Brutally tossed aside, not a care left for you,

The loss crippling, devastating your very core,

Life is over, you’re forever broken, shredded,

The world now viewed through glazed eyes.

***

You’re finally defeated, your fight now lost,

The last of your strength fleeing, expiring,

You tremble in fear, awaiting the grand finale,

After doing your best, you’re left a broken shell.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
