You weren't the white rabbit

that everyone thought you were

just the king of hearts,

in your own mind.

I was hard at work

painting the roses.

while you sat on your throne,

shouting "off with her head",

maybe they were never red enough,

or maybe it was the paint,

that you gave me,

was thin,

so it peeled, cracked,

and faded,

withering the blooms.

You tried to cut off my neck,

from the stem of me,

make me bleed,

and drink my own tears,

But the joke's on you,

just look how I grew,

your chessboard now

fits under my shoe.
