A bee in my room

A quiet tale of wings clipped behind closed windows.

By Anastasia TatherPublished about a year ago • 2 min read

There once was a bee in my room.

She appeared one day and never left.

My cat wanted to kill her,

and the bee knew

but she didn’t care.

As days passed,

their relationship stayed the same.

My cat wanted to hunt the bee,

still,

she didn't care.

At first,

he didn't even want to hurt her,

for him,

it was just a game.

Then one peaceful night,

he just did.

Yet, the bee,

not fearing what may lie ahead,

didn't think too much about it,

she didn't care.

She was cautious at first,

as something felt off.

She was now hurt,

harassed,

betrayed.

He said “It’s just an accident,

nobody needs to know”.

She trusted him.

For the next few weeks,

these accidents kept happening,

many times,

far more times than one should count.

The bee used to love flying around with glee.

Even with her friends,

they were always out.

Sometimes at the park,

sometimes at the beach,

and sometimes in my window.

It didn't matter where she was,

she would always be flying.

Her wings,

now laid broken,

reminding her of such times when she could fly.

She loved it so much,

she cried about it every night.

The cat knew,

however,

he stayed quiet.

Given that

he didn't care.

I saw her, hovering by the lamp.

I could have opened the window.

I didn’t.

One day,

with all the strength she could gather,

she whispered

"I thought about

maybe, going out,

maybe, tomorrow,

maybe, with my friends"

He only let out a sigh

"No"

She then,

with fearful and teary eyes,

tried to explain

"But I miss them"

Silence filled my room.

I watched from my bed,

pretending not to see

what was really happening.

"Since you broke my wings,

I can’t fly anymore,

I can’t see them anymore,

I’m not happy anymore”

she continued.

His face,

looking right at me,

turned grey

as a shadow of sorrow,

quiet as regret,

as the hush of heartbreak.

"Don't dare

to blame

me"

he shouted,

while tears drained down his face.

She was now even sadder,

thinking she had broken something inside him.

Perhaps she could fix him,

or so she thought.

What she didn’t know,

he had always been broken.

Since then,

things went cold.

His attention felt undeserved.

He hadn't talked for days.

And although she needed him.

He didn’t want her,

not anymore.

Right there she understood.

It was all his fault,

she shouldn't have blamed herself.

But it was too late.

He was now everything,

everything she had.

She had lost it all.

Her friends,

her family,

her job,

her life.

Everything because of him.

He was done.

Even so,

she didn’t want him to leave,

as the scars he had left in her body,

felt like burning brand new wounds.

It was sad to see,

the cat had already finished the game.

The one where

the bee

can never win.

Now,

once again,

she didn't care

about anything.

She climbed.

Until her small

hurt

body

reached my window.

I could have tried to stop her.

I didn't.

Instead,

I finally opened the window

just for her.

After all,

accidents happen.

Right?
