How should we approach mental health—with ourselves? With friends? Our children?

What is that dark

holding

your hand?

Its color lacking or

concealed, reaching—

It moves

its gaze around your body

like a child

with a magnifying glass

killing ants in the sunshine. It is

walking step by step

with you like a shadow

of the heavy backpack the one

that held in

every textbook the first week of school

when you

thought you had to bring them

all to class.

Remember

how tough it was to zip up?

sad poetry
