An old black man sidles across the street
Black suit, white tie
Folded newspaper in his hand
>
He swings his arm and fans the paper behind him
As he strut-swaggers
Rowing himself along
Leaving the scent of “Grey Flannel” in his wake
>
Inside, I search for paper,
Trying to jot down a line
>
I’m shocked from my reverie
By the face of the security guard
Who has paper and pen
But the line is gone
Victim to multi-colored braids
And a massive forehead scar
>
I get in the elevator
The doors open before my floor
A tiny magenta-haired cleaning lady gets in
“Hola! Como esta?” I say
“I’m from Sheboygan,” she replies
