Summer at the cabin

Summer starts out cautiously at the end of spring,

Slowly the plants grow and the flowers bloom,

Taking advantage of the nourishment the winter did bring,

A bright blue sky above replaces the cloudy gloom.

The porous earth soaks up all the mid-April rain,

This allows for it to provide a muddy home for the worms,

Which are the dinner for the birds who have returned again,

To make their nests up in the trees, on their terms.

The other wildlife is out in full force now too,

Enjoying each additional hour of daylight,

The deer have found a plant on which to chew,

As two squirrels see the same acorn and fight.

Up above the blue sky darkens and the stars come out,

When it’s clear you can see several constellations,

Bats are exploring the night, flying about,

While the fireflies flock to the brightest locations.

I have watched this day pass from the cabin at the lake,

And now retreat to my bed because I can’t wait to awake.
