As festival season kicks into high gear, it's essential for me as a live music photographer to discuss the key items I pack for capturing these electrifying events. Let's dive right in and begin with the camera bodies themselves.

When it comes to camera bodies, I always make sure to have two on hand for festivals and live gigs. This serves as a safety net in case one malfunctions and allows for seamless lens swapping without the hassle of changing lenses on the spot. For my setups, I rely on the Sony a7iii and the Sony a7iv. These mirrorless systems are perfect for low-light conditions and offer the added benefit of being lightweight, saving my back and feet from unnecessary strain. Dual memory card slots are a crucial feature, enabling me to back up my photos onto two SD cards simultaneously, significantly reducing the risk of losing my work.

In terms of lenses, I believe in being well-prepared for any situation that may arise at festivals. That's why I ensure I have a diverse range of lenses at my disposal, including both prime and zoom options. Here are the lenses I frequently rely on:

My go-to lens, which has served me faithfully for years, is the Sigma 35mm 1.4 for Canon (used with an MC-11 adapter for Sony). It boasts a wide aperture of 1.4, making it perfect for capturing moments in low-light conditions. Additionally, its focal length closely mimics the human eye, resulting in photos that feel natural and immersive. This lens is versatile, allowing me to capture artist portraits, lively crowd shots, and compelling front-of-house photography.

When I need to capture vast scenes or find myself in tight spaces, the Samyang 18mm 2.8 for Sony comes to the rescue. With a relatively fast aperture and an affordable price point, this wide-angle lens allows me to document moments in cramped stages or from unique perspectives.

The Sigma 28-70mm 2.8 for Sony is my go-to zoom lens, offering the flexibility to swiftly switch between wide-angle shots and tighter compositions. It's particularly useful when shooting from the pit in smaller stages, enabling me to capture a range of perspectives without sacrificing image quality.

The Sony 70-200mm 2.8 is the crown jewel of my music photography gear. While it comes with a substantial price tag, this zoom lens delivers unparalleled performance. It's the perfect choice for larger stages, allowing me to capture stunning details from a distance, whether I'm shooting from the pit or positioned at the front of house.

When it comes to editing, I rely on my trusted companion, the MacBook Pro 2015, along with a selection of SSDs. The Samsung T7 stands out as my preferred choice for storage. For post-processing, Adobe Lightroom is my primary tool, supplemented by Adobe Photoshop for specific edits and enhancements when necessary.

To ensure uninterrupted shooting, I always bring four batteries (two for each camera) and a reliable battery charger. This setup allows me to have backup power available while using the other set. When it comes to storage, I carry four SanDisk 128GB SD cards (two for each camera) and a selection of additional spare cards with capacities of 128GB and 64GB, providing ample space to capture countless moments.

While flash photography is often prohibited during live music performances at larger events, I pack a Godox V1 flash for backstage portraits. This versatile tool proves invaluable when additional lighting is needed, allowing me to create stunning images in controlled environments.

A reliable and well-organized camera bag is essential to keep my equipment safe and easily accessible. Currently, my go-to choice is the WANDRD PRVKE 21 Litre bag. With its thoughtful design and functionality, it proves to be the perfect companion for my festival adventures.

Packing for a festival is an ongoing learning process, shaped by personal experiences and continuous refinement. By sharing my insights, I hope to provide a helpful starting point for aspiring festival photographers. As you embark on your own journey, remember to tailor your equipment list to your unique style and preferences, continually adapting and refining it based on your experiences.
