Sudhir Shivram, the winner of the National Geography Yellow Border award in 2013, said that rather than letting the camera control him, he believes in taking control of the camera. And to control the potent camera, you must understand its basics.

When it comes to advanced-level photography, Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras are a popular choice for photographers looking to take high-quality, beautiful pictures. Whether you're an amateur or a professional, there are a few key things to keep in mind when using a DSLR to capture stunning images.

Understanding the Basics

First and foremost, it's important to understand the basics of photography and the role of different camera settings. Aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are the three main settings that will affect the exposure and overall look of your photos. Aperture controls the amount of light that enters the lens, shutter speed determines how long the sensor is exposed to light, and ISO determines the sensitivity of the sensor. By adjusting these settings, you can control the depth of field, motion blur, and overall brightness of your photos.

Be a composer of images

Another important aspect of DSLR photography is composition. The way you arrange the elements in a scene can greatly impact the overall aesthetic of your photo. One popular composition technique is the rule of thirds, which involves dividing the frame into thirds horizontally and vertically, and placing the main subject of the photo along one of the lines or at the intersection of two lines. This can create a more balanced and visually pleasing image.

Let there be light and understand its purpose

Additionally, lighting is a crucial element when taking beautiful photos. The best time of day to shoot is during the "golden hour," which is the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. The warm, soft light during these times can create a beautiful, natural-looking glow in your photos. When shooting in other lighting conditions, try to avoid harsh shadows and overexposure by using a flash or adjusting your camera settings accordingly.

Seeking subjects

Another helpful tip is to always be on the lookout for interesting subjects and perspectives. Take the time to explore your surroundings and look for interesting textures, patterns, and shapes. Try shooting from different angles, such as low to the ground or high above, to add depth and interest to your photos.

Let the child inside you be alive

It's also important to practice and experiment with your DSLR. Take advantage of the manual settings and play around with different combinations of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to see how they affect your photos. Take a variety of photos in different lighting conditions and locations to see what works best.

You may also buy different lighting props from sites like Shopify to infuse your pictures with a fictional or artistic aura.

Give your images an artistic finishing

Finally, post-processing can enhance and bring out the best in your photos. Edit your pictures using software like Lightroom, Photoshop, or any other image editing software available. Adjust the brightness, contrast, color balance, and other settings to bring out the best in your photos.

Taking beautiful photos with a DSLR camera requires an understanding of the basics of photography, composition, lighting and post-processing, and practice. Never forget to brace yourself with cameras and photo accessories like a tripod, lens, flare, etc. By keeping these tips in mind, you can take your photography skills to the next level and capture stunning, high-quality images. And once you've gained enough experience in the field of photography, you can participate into various photography contests that happen around the world.
