humanity
Isn't it ironic that the very best of humanity is seen through the love and empathy we show to our pets?
Animal Slavery
Animals everywhere are becoming extinct thanks to us human beings taking away their homes, stealing their fur, meat, horns, heads, feet, teeth, etc. Animal cubs are abducted from their mothers and fathers so they can entertain our humanly race in circuses, zoos, and parties. Something many people look past is their hurt and cries for help. Killer whales are loving creatures, and so are lions, tigers, and elephants. News goes all over the web talking about "killer whale drowns trainer" or "gorilla takes hold of a child" and the captors of those animals kill those creatures only because they have had enough of all the "watch what we trained them to do" acts.

Neil would come home from school and I would be waiting for him. As soon as he saw me, his face lit up. A smile so big and bright it filled the room and also my heart. He said, "There you are! Right where I left you. Were you a good dog?" I always answered him, "No, I terrorized the cat and blamed him for eating all of the treats. I got into the dirt and tracked it all over the carpet. Then, right before you got home, I dug out all of the folded laundry and rolled in it. " Then Neil laughed and laughed. He laughed in that little kid laugh that was instantly infectious. I always told him about my day, just so I could hear it. It was what I lived for.

I love my dogs more than I love most humans. I love most dogs more than I even like most humans. I choose my dogs' happiness, a lot of the time, over my own pleasure, contentment, comfort, money, or sex life. I do weird things. So does my boyfriend. We thought we were the only weirdos with dogs, but the longer we have these creatures in our lives, the more crazy weird dog people we meet and the more we realise we are part of a wonderful, strange community of people that do the exact same weird things as us.

Whilst my passion and love for all animals means that choosing the charities for this piece was incredibly hard, I decided to go a little bit off the beaten path and not opt for obvious choices that already have huge worldwide organisations and adverts all over the television. Instead, I went with a few independent rescuers and animal lovers that are close to my heart.

There is so much beauty on such a small planet within the universe. There is also so much that we are not educated on. This earth is the only known planet that is capable of inhabiting life. We, as a whole, need to try our very best to make sure that this planet is well taken care of. So many things are happening in our world that is destroying our planet, some of which are out of our control. We should try to fix the things that are in our control. One of the things that is really going to hurt our planet in the long run is animal abuse. Without animals, our planet could possibly deteriorate. We should boycott animal abuse agencies to show that we want them shut down. Animals should not be held captive for entertainment, trained to do unnatural things, overpopulated at a store, used to test cosmetics on, or worn as a pair of boots. There are so many different ways to make a change to save these incredible creatures.

Bruce Cameron wrote, "When we adopt a dog or any pet, we know it is going to end with us having to say goodbye, but we still do it. And we do it for a very good reason: They bring so much joy and optimism and happiness. They attack every moment of every day with that attitude."

When the topic of animal cruelty presents itself in conversation, what first comes to mind? Animal testing? Abuse? Endangerment? Though these things are considered valid forms of animal cruelty, the qualifications for cruelty fall deeper than one would expect. In the documentary Blackfish, an orca in captivity is closely observed to prove that whale captivity is cruel and inhumane. The facts presented in this documentary lead one to consider the following: why does society need to be aware of the politics of animal cruelty and captivity, and what does society gain from this knowledge?
Lost In A Fire
Preface: Our house burned down on February 20, 2016. Since that time, I have been almost completely unable to write anything of substance.
Toronto Pig Save
Every day we are alive, we encounter many sets of rules. Normally, we do not even have to think about what we are supposed to do or not do because the answers come naturally to us. Doing the opposite of what most of society would do is widely considered bad, strange, or even extreme, but it does not have to be. One example of positive deviance are the actions of the organizations known as the Toronto Pig Save. The Toronto Pig Save was established in December 2010 and has been meeting three times a week since July 2011. It is a vegan animal rights group that has been known to stop trucks packed with the animals en route to the slaughter houses. The animals are usually very squished, overheated, and have gone days without something to eat or drink. While the activists typically cannot actually save the animals and get them off the truck, they decided they deserve at least one act of kindness in their small lives, so they often give the pigs water straight from water bottles through the tiny holes in the sides of the truck.
Finding Home
The car screeched to a stop. In the pale moonlight the cemetery cast an array of eerie shadows across the graves. As she got out of the car, she heard whispers of unspoken words and felt the presence of a thousand resting souls watching her every step. Ice licked the back of her neck and ever so carefully crept up her spine.
Pets and Babies
Pets are strange sometimes. To many people, pets are their children. Some people dress them up. Some people carry them around with them wherever they go. Some people have endless photoshoots with their pets commemorating their lives. And some people go to extremes that I can't even bring to mind at the moment.

I had never lived a day without a pet. Before I was born, my parents had already adopted a dog they named Jackson. Jackson was a beagle-basset hound mix. He was black with white splotches. From what I understand, he was a bit of a handful. My parents have told me a story where he had eaten an entire thing of Vaseline and, the next morning, regretted it. When my parents brought me home, he wasn't sure how to handle it. I'm sure it didn't help that when I learned motor control, I would pick on him by tugging on his floppy ears. Then, as Jackson and I aged, we became the best of friends. By the time I had reached the fourth grade, he very much became my dog. He slept in my room, typically on my clothes. I fed him, let him outside, and played fetch with him. In his old age, he became a grumpy old man. Of course, I'm assuming this is due to the fact that we had adopted another dog who is a psycho towards any other animal. Anyway, Jackson began to only tolerate the rest of my family, but his love for me remained the same until he passed away.
